Laysan Duck preening
on Eastern Island
In 2004 and 2005, Laysan Ducks were
introduced to Midway from Laysan Island.
The purpose is to reduce the vulnerability of the species
by establishing populations on more than one island.
They are doing well.

Laysan Albatross taking off
In contrast with small passerines that take flight from wherever they are standing,
Albatross are so large that they need running
distance to take off. They first spread their wings
and then run until they can lift off, like an airplane (no, I think it's the other way around).
More wind makes it easier.

Yellow Canary singing
Canaries were brought to Midway as pets by
Commercial Pacific Cable employees and released in 1910.
The canaries have continued to thrive and reproduce (there are reportedly around 500 birds).
What was amusing to me was to hear canary songs above the whistles of the nesting albatross.

fly directly at me. These photos show how close it came to me before
heading off.

Laysan Albatross crash landing.
Albatross spend most of their lives landing on water.
Some have learned to flare their wings for a softer landing on terra firma
(like a parachute jumper).
Others, like this one, crash land.
As shown in the next two photos,
this bird gathered itself up non the worse-for-wear.

In contrast, this Laysan Albatross landed gracefully to greet
the one in the next photo. It was aided by landing into a substantial wind.

This was the only bird of this species that I saw on this trip.
Softball that was mistaken for an egg by an albatross.
I saw a bird try to turn and sit on it.
